Review: Choffy – Brewable Chocolate

Last week the folks over at Choffy were nice enough to send me a sample of their brewable chocolate.  I must say, I was skeptical at first. Chocolate that you brew like coffee? Is it hot chocolate, is it coffee? Why would I go through the trouble of dirtying the french press for a cup of hot cocoa? Clearly I was a little confused about the concept.

After reading the material they sent me, chock full of information about the health benefits of Choffy vs. regular coffee, I was intrigued. Essentially, it’s pure cacao free from any additives or chemicals, while being a great source of antioxidants and caffeine-free energy boost. Sounds amazing, right?

To be fair this hot beverage really can’t (and shouldn’t) be compared to coffee or hot chocolate – it’s in a league of its own. Yes, it is made from cacao (like hot chocolate) and you brew it (like coffee) – but the similarities end there.

I followed the instructions provided and brewed the Choffy in a french press. I waited (impatiently) the entire suggested 5 minutes before pressing the plunger down. When I poured it, I was caught quite off guard as the color/consistency was more tea-like than coffee or hot chocolate – very weak and light in color. I added a bit of almond milk and enjoyed the new drink.

The flavor is very subtle yet distinct at the same time- slightly bitter, but in a pleasant way. Its a very light and fragrant hot drink – something I’ll definitely be including in my rotation Chai/Hot Cocoa rotation. I will definitely make it a bit stronger next time around to get a deeper flavor – but like the first cup enough to want another:)
